Columbus School for Girls Reviews

I have taught at a number of schools in my academic career, and I must confess that I have never seen a more committed facutly, a more gifted student body, and a more supportive parent community than at CSG. Whether it is through the unique usage of May Program, or the fundraising fun of Jubilee! or the junior trip to Stratford, CSG is all about the strength of academics and making this place a poweful an incubator for the strengths of girls! The level of long-term dedication that the faculty have shown at CSG is amazing! I highly recommend sending your daughter to CSG!

As a CSG parent, I found the Program for Young Children to be exceptional! My daughter has experienced so much growth emotionally, socially, and academically. At an early age the girls are learning to find their voice and build their confidence. I love the philosophy of the program that encourages curiosity for learning, rather than the rote drill and skill method. My husband and I have been embraced by the CSG community and appreciate the constant communication from the tremendous faculty and administrators.

The best thing about CSG the dedicated staff and faculty...when you pair a talented staff with involved parents--the students excel

I am a student at Columbus School for Girls. I have been there since the 5th grade and am currently in the 8th grade. This school there is much more than a school; it is another community you have to call your own. The teachers are great! We are encouraged that its wonderful to ask questions even if it required asking 10 times in one period. The students are close to each other as well as other parent. As far as I'm concerned, many of the parents at CSG look out for me like they look out for their own children. Over all, Columbus School for Girls is an excellent institution to send your daughter!

The program for Young Children is different in their learning approach than the lower, middle and upper schools. Parents have to work with the girls 'at home' if they want them to have the foundational educational basics, such as reading, writing, etc. I can understand and encourage parents to work with their children at home, but for the amount of money invested into this school, there should be a more balanced curriculum so that the girls are being prepared for Kindergarten both socially emotionally as well as academically. There does not appear to be a welcomed invitation for parents to express their concern or even to discuss the method of learning with the director of PYC. It appears that there is a 'This is the way it's done, so deal with it attitude'. PYC is good for social development not academics.

CSG Lower school is a terrific, as is PYC. The teachers and head of lower school are first rate. Middle School, however is another story. There, the emphasis is on conformity (binders, skirt length, type of pencil and tote bags) rather than education. There is substantial variation in teacher quality, some are excellent, some are weak. They speak about encouraging girls to take risks, but when a girl does so either academically or in extra curricular activities, there is generally a lack of support or push back from faculty and administration. Based on our experience, I can how see a girl striving for excellence in her own way could have difficulty at CSG. A new head of school will join soon, and so perhaps there will be some change.

I spent fourteen years at csg - from preschool to graduation. I was consistently at the top of my class, both at the school, and nationally. Not only did the administration not push me to excel; they actively disciplined me for asking for a greater challenge. My mother was appalled and dismayed by my treatment there, but there were no other options. Please do not send your children to a single sex school. Send them somewhere where they will compete against the best, no matter their sex. Now that it's an option, send them to the columbus academy.

I am very pleased with the investment that I am making so far at CSG, and this is exactly what it is, 'An Investment'! As an African American mom to a new student in PYC,my experience so far has been very worthwhile. I believe on the contrary that the school has great diversity, it depends on what category of diversity a person is looking for! There are student of 'all' nationalities. There are all types of families. I am a single African American mom of a bi-racial daughter. CSG is a melting pot of several cultures and experiences! My daughters level of confidence has grown just in the little time, she has been at CSG and I can't wait to see her continue to grow and thrive. I have established friendships with mom's that I would never have come in contact with before CSG. The exposure and opportunities are unmeasurable!

As a parent of a kindergardner at CSG, I a not happy. I think the school could be a little more diverse and teach the girls more about the differences in eachother. Also, at times I feel like I am more like a dollar sign, than a parent. I hate the phone calls asking for donations. I think it is rude. I understand they give away scholarships, but not much until high school. My daughter has learned a lot, but I think she would grow more if she was in a more diverse population. I hope that they can make the school more affordable, so that more families can attend.

CSG is fabulous. Girls become so confident and assured. The curriculum is innovative and challenging and the school attracts a wide spectrum of students who enrich the educational experience.

There is simply no better place in town for an exceptional education for your girls. My child is currently finishing her first year there (9th grade) and she has been challenged and lifted to a new place as a student. Every day she comes home with exciting stories of wonderful teachers and amazing lessons. She will be well prepared for college, and much sooner than 12th grade. The school offers amazing educational opportunities and also opportunities one may not anticipate. It is worth every dollar to send your daughter there if education is your top priority and your daughter really enjoys learning.

As a student at this school, I feel as though I am getting a higher education than the average person. Attending this school gives me the advantage of a wider range of knowledge.

After graduating from CSG several years ago and continuing to an Ivy League university, I was surprised to learn that not all women are as confident and intelligent as my peers at CSG. The availability of positions on sports teams to those who wanted to play, the high level of interaction between students and teachers, and the school's belief in the talent of its students all had very positive effects on my development. Diversity is welcomed by students and faculty; if a discriminatory or racist incident were to occur, I have confidence that the school would deal with it immediately. My only criticism is that in recent years the school seems to have admitted more ultra-wealthy students with lower academic credentials; while this undoubtedly helps with 'fundraising,' I believe it has degraded the overall quality of the CSG education; I would like to see more scholarship students in the classes.

the acadmic programs are not bad, they are pretty challanging. they need to add a softball team, but other then that the sports are pretty good, over half the school plays sports. The art department need to expand.

As a former student at Columbus School for Girls and a current university student, I can confidently say that CSG gave me the skills I need to be successful at the college level. While many of my classmates in college had never written a real research paper (really, anything over 3 pages), I was comfortable with the workload at college because CSG had prepared me so well. The faculty are amazing--they are very engaged with all students--not only will they know the names of most girls in the school, but many of my teachers knew my parents and other siblings as well. I couldn't have asked for a better high school experience.

I have a daughter that attends this school I really like it because she gets the best education. She doesn't like it cause she says the girls are too 'cliquish'.

I attended CSG from the 6th grade until I graduated in 2001. I am a African-American and I found there was NO prejuidice there. CSG is very diverse and accepting of all people. It was the best education I could have obtained. I have four younger sibilings who are attending co-ed public schools right now and I am now able to see just how blessed I was to attend CSG. CSG provides a wonderful, diverse, loving enviorment and I would recommend it to anyone who wants their children to be prepared for college and prosperous in life.

I am currently a sophomore at CSG and love it. I started at CSG in 7th grade. The atmosphere is wonderful for learning, and the teachers are kind and great teachers. I know that the many things I learn at school with be used all throughout my life.

CSG has provided my daughters with an outstanding educational experience combining a rigorous and interdisciplinary curriculum with an environment which encourages individual thought and growth. Each girl truly finds a voice, and learns how to articulate her beliefs and thoughts with confidence and poise.

We sent our daughter to CSG for 2 years when she became overly distracted by boys at school. She is now back in a co-ed setting, but the study habits she learned and her desire for excellence have remained. On a down note, this was the first setting in which she encountered bias against 'poor' people and African-Americans. She is white and upper middle class and was horrified.

My daughter loves to go to school everyday. She feels safe and accepted in the CSG community. I cannot say enough good things about CSG and its Faculty, Staff and Administration. I rate CSG a 5 star school!
